How do I find research material on my topic in:

    • JOURNAL ARTICLES
Go to the http://www.umdnj.edu/librweb/databases.html UMDNJ Libraries Online Databases, make a selection and follow the search instructions.  Place your cursor over the title of the database listed to obtain a content description.
A tutorial on OVID MEDLINE is available at Intro to OVID MEDLINE Searching http://www2.umdnj.edu/rwjlbweb/ovidpuzz/intro.htm
    • BOOKS
Go to the UMDNJ Libraries Electronic Books http://www2.umdnj.edu/rwjlbweb/ebooks-subject.htm
    • INTERNET SITES
Go to the University Libraries Selected Internet Resources http://www.umdnj.edu/librweb/internet.htm. These sources have been screened for quality.

To search on your own, use the University Libraries Web/Internet Search Tools http://www.umdnj.edu/librweb/a-srch.htm
or the UMDNJ Search Page http://www.umdnj.edu/homeweb/search/search.html

Choose a quality search engine such as Google http://www.google.com , Northern Light http://www.northernlight.com , Allthesites http://www.allthesites.com/, or AltaVista http://www.altavista.com/

Use the most specific term for the topic you are searching; do not use long, drawn-out phrases.

Check your spelling and/or try another term, if you do not get good results.

Remember that much of the information on the Internet is not quality controlled; U.S. government sites (with .gov in the address) are more likely to have quality material.

How do I access the articles I have identified?
Many of the University-wide Databases http://www.umdnj.edu/librweb/catalog.htm include direct links to full text of at least some of the articles. If the citation includes a caption indicating "full text"; click to go automatically to the complete article.  The University may have full-text of many of the other journal articles that are not linked directly from the database.

Not all journals are offered via full-text online. For those, or owned by the University Libraries, you may complete an Interlibrary Loan request form. Please see other FAQs for more information about ILLs.

What do I need to access these materials online?
To access many databases and full-text materials online from an off-campus computer, you need to have a UMDNJ Libraries remote access account.  These accounts are automatically created when you register as a UMDNJ Library patron.  For details, please consult UMDNJ Libraries Remote Access Information http://www.umdnj.edu/librweb/access/

How do I find out if a book is available at UMDNJ?
Check the Online Catalog http://voyager.umdnj.edu/  to determine availability and loan status; course textbooks, reference and reserve books do not circulate.

How do I find out if print materials are available from a local source?
If there are other colleges, universities or large public libraries located near you, search for their Web site on the Internet, then look for a link to Library Services or Online Catalog.  Once you locate the item you are interested in, contact the library to see if you can borrow or photocopy it.

How do I borrow a book in person?
You will need a UMDNJ Library account to borrow books.  As of 2002, all SHRP Distance Learning students are pre-registered as UMDNJ Library patrons.

How can I obtain a master's thesis or doctoral dissertation?
